Cash out betting: how bookmakers price the offer, and what it costs you

TL;DR: Cash out settles a bet before the event finishes, for an amount the bookmaker offers you there and then. Sky Bet and bet365 both say the offer comes from your stake, the price you took and the current price, and neither says how much it holds back. The 5% to 15% margin that Google's AI Overview quotes comes from an affiliate guide that gives no source. You can check any offer yourself: multiply your potential return by the current margin-free probability, and whatever the offer falls short of that is the cost of getting out early. On Pred, cashing out sells your contracts to another trader at the best bid on the order book, less the trading fee, and you can sell any share of the position.

What is cash out in betting?

Cash out lets you settle a bet early for an amount the bookmaker offers on the match as it stands. bet365's help centre describes it as securing a return on the current state of the event before it has finished. Once you accept, the bet settles straight away and the final result no longer changes what you get. Neither bet365 nor Sky Bet will reinstate a bet you have cashed out.

Sky Bet offers cash out before kick-off, in-play and between the legs of a multiple, on singles and accumulators across most sports. The offer can come in above or below your stake, depending on how the bet is going. Some markets don't carry it at all, and Sky Bet gives football handicap markets as an example.

Neither bookmaker promises the offer will be there. bet365 says it cannot guarantee cash out on any selection. Sky Bet calls cash out an optional service at its discretion, says its trading team regularly reviews customer accounts, and reserves the right to withdraw the feature under its internal trading risk policies. Our piece on why betting accounts get restricted covers what those reviews look for.

How is a cash-out value calculated?

Sky Bet says it calculates a cash-out value from the amount staked, the price when you placed the bet and the current price. bet365 names the same three inputs among the criteria it uses. Neither publishes the formula.

A bet's fair value mid-match is its potential return multiplied by the current chance that it wins. Take a hypothetical £10 bet at 3.00, which returns £30 if it comes in. At half-time your team leads 1-0 and the bookmaker's live prices are 1.40 for the win, 4.50 for the draw and 9.00 for the away side.

Turn those prices into percentages and they add up to 104.8%, so they include a margin. Divide the win's 71.4% by 104.8% to take the margin out and you get a 68.2% chance. Your bet is worth £30 × 68.2%, or £20.45, and any offer below that is what cashing out costs you.

Dividing by the quoted 1.40 instead would give £21.43, more than the bet is worth on the bookmaker's own numbers, because the margin inflates the chance a quoted price implies. So the offer has to come in below that, and no bookmaker says by how much.

Accumulators get repriced leg by leg. Sky Bet's own example is a treble where, after 80 minutes, two teams lead 3-0 and 2-0 but the third is losing 2-1 and has drifted to 50/1, which drags down the whole cash-out value. Every open leg feeds its current price into the offer.

How much margin do bookmakers take on cash out?

No bookmaker publishes a figure. When we checked on 29 September 2026, Google's AI Overview for "cash out betting" said bookmakers build a 5% to 15% margin into the offer. It cited an affiliate guide that gives no study, data or source for the number.

The terms do show where an offer can let you down. Sky Bet lists goals, VAR checks, break points and tries among the moments when cash out shows as updating while it recalculates prices, and says each extra in-play leg raises the risk of a suspension. bet365 says a request can fail if prices move or the market is suspended in the short delay after you press the button. Our piece on the 200ms after a goal explains why sportsbooks suspend at those moments.

Sky Bet also removes cash out if it loses the live data feed for an event. Free bets carry their own rule: Sky Bet, bet365 and Betfair all hold cash out back until the offer is worth more than the free bet stake, because a free bet stake isn't part of the return.

How does cash out work on a betting exchange?

On an exchange, another customer takes the other side of your cash out at prices customers have posted. Betfair works out the value in real time from live exchange prices. Because those prices keep moving, it doesn't guarantee the amount: you can get more than shown, or the cash out can fail or go through only in part, and Betfair then offers a new amount on whatever is left.

Betfair charges commission on net winnings in each market, so a cash out that locks in a profit pays commission on that profit. Its auto cash out closes your position once profit reaches a level you set, and partial cash out lets you take part of the value now. Both work on desktop only. Our commission comparison sets out what each exchange charges.

An exchange cash out leaves you in the same place as trading out yourself: backing or laying the selection at the current price so that every result pays the same. Our guide to lay bets walks through one with the numbers.

How do you cash out on a prediction market?

On a prediction market, cashing out means selling your contracts. Pred's documentation says other traders set the cashout price. You sell into the best bid on the order book, less the trading fee, and you can sell any share of your position. Pred runs the venue and never takes the other side of a trade.

Each contract pays $1 if its outcome happens, so a bid of 68¢ reads as a 68% chance, and you see it before you sell. Take 30 Yes contracts on the same team, bought at 33¢ for $9.90. If the team leads 1-0 at half-time and the best bid is 68¢, selling all 30 returns $20.40 before the fee. Sell 15 and you take $10.20 now, while the other 15 pay $15 if the team wins.

Hold instead and Pred resolves the market in under three to four minutes once the result is confirmed. Every market on Pred works this way, across Europe's top football leagues, the EFL, MLS, the NBA and the NFL. Trade the Game.

Common questions

What happens if I cash out a bet?

The bookmaker settles the bet straight away for the amount it offered, and the final result no longer affects what you receive. bet365 and Sky Bet both say a cashed-out bet can't be reinstated. Sky Bet credits the money to your account immediately.

Is cashing out a good idea?

It depends on the offer and on whether your view of the match has changed. Work out the bet's fair value first: the potential return multiplied by the current margin-free probability. The gap between that and the offer is what you pay to leave early, and on an exchange or prediction market you see the price you're selling at before you trade.

Why is my cash-out value so low?

An offer drops when any leg moves against you. Sky Bet's example is a treble where, after 80 minutes, two teams lead 3-0 and 2-0 but the third is losing 2-1 and has drifted to 50/1, which drags down the whole offer. The bookmaker also deducts an amount from the bet's fair value and doesn't publish how much.

Why is cash out suspended?

Bookmakers pause cash out while they reprice after big moments in a match. Sky Bet names goals, VAR checks, break points and tries, and removes cash out if it loses the live data feed for an event. A request can also fail if prices move in the short delay after you press the button.

What is partial cash out?

Partial cash out settles part of your bet now and leaves the rest running. Sky Bet says later events only affect the part you haven't cashed out, and Betfair's exchange offers partial cash out on desktop. On Pred you can sell any share of your contracts and keep the rest.

How much margin do bookmakers take on cash out?

No bookmaker publishes a figure. The 5% to 15% range in Google's AI Overview comes from an affiliate guide that cites no source for it. You can measure the cost of any offer by comparing it with your potential return multiplied by the current margin-free probability.

Can you cash out on a prediction market?

Yes. On Pred, cashing out sells your contracts into the best bid on the order book, less the trading fee, and you can sell any share of the position. Other traders set that price, and because a contract pays $1, the bid reads as the market's probability.
