BTTS explained: what both teams to score means, and how often it landed in 21 Premier League seasons
TL;DR: BTTS stands for both teams to score. Yes wins if each team scores at least once in 90 minutes plus stoppage time, and No wins if either team fails to score. In 7,980 Premier League matches from 2005/06 to 2025/26, both teams scored in 51.3%. Of the 11 leagues we checked, the Bundesliga ran highest over the last five seasons, at 60.1%.
Both teams to score is a market on goals at both ends, and the winner doesn't come into it. A 2-1 win and a 1-1 draw settle the same way, and so do a 1-0 and a 0-0.
This guide covers how BTTS settles, how it works on Pred and what the record says. The data is football-data.co.uk's results and prices for 21 Premier League seasons, plus five seasons of results from 10 other leagues.
What does BTTS mean?
BTTS means both teams to score. The market has two outcomes. Yes wins when each team scores at least one goal, and No wins when one team or both fail to score.
Sky Bet's rules settle it on "whether both teams will score over the course of the 90 minutes" (Sky Bet football rules). Those 90 minutes include stoppage time. William Hill settles BTTS on normal time "with extra time and penalties excluded" (William Hill).
A No result isn't the same as a 0-0. Of the 3,883 Premier League matches since 2005/06 that settled No, 14.8% finished 0-0. Home wins to nil made up 52.3%, and away wins to nil 32.9%.
How does BTTS work on Pred?
On Pred, a sports prediction exchange, BTTS is a Yes/No contract priced between 0¢ and 100¢. Pred's market guide defines Yes as both teams scoring at least once and No as at least one team keeping a clean sheet.
The price is the market's implied probability (how Pred prices markets). A Yes contract at 55¢ puts the chance of both teams scoring at 55%. It pays $1 if they do and nothing if they don't. When a Yes buyer and a No buyer are matched, what the two pay adds up to $1, so Pred builds no margin into the price. Taking a price still means crossing the gap between the best bid and the best offer.
Pred's market rules settle BTTS on the first 90 minutes plus stoppage time, using the official statistics. If a match is postponed, the market stays open until it has been completed. A match that starts and isn't completed resolves on the official final score, and one cancelled with no replay resolves at 50-50.
You don't have to hold to full time. Pred keeps BTTS open while the match is played. You can sell some or all of a position at the best bid, minus a small fee (cashout). Orders placed during a live match go through a 3-second delay (order types). Buying No on Pred is the same position as laying Yes on a betting exchange (how laying works).
Pred's fee schedule, which its docs list as launching soon, charges only the side that takes a price: 2.5% × price × (1 − price) per contract. An order that rests on the book until another trader fills it pays nothing. Markets resolve within three to four minutes of the result being confirmed (how Pred settles).
How often do both teams score?
In just over half of Premier League matches. Both teams scored in 4,097 of the 7,980 played from 2005/06 to 2025/26, 51.3%.
The rate moves from season to season. It was lowest in 2005/06, at 44.2%, and highest in 2023/24, at 61.6%, the season with the most goals in the data at 3.28 a game. The last three seasons all came in at 56% or more.

The 2026/27 season has started close to the long-run rate. Both teams scored in 40 of the first 80 matches, to 25 October.
Which league has the most BTTS?
The Bundesliga, of the 11 leagues on Pred that we checked. Both teams scored in 60.1% of its matches over the last five complete seasons. MLS was close behind at 59.6%, and Brazil's Série A was lowest at 48.6%.
League | Matches | Both teams scored | Over 2.5 goals | Goals a game | Break-even Yes price (decimal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bundesliga | 1,530 | 60.1% | 61.0% | 3.18 | 1.66 |
MLS | 2,431 | 59.6% | 57.5% | 2.93 | 1.68 |
Süper Lig | 1,721 | 56.3% | 54.3% | 2.85 | 1.78 |
Liga MX | 1,530 | 55.8% | 52.8% | 2.74 | 1.79 |
Premier League | 1,900 | 55.3% | 56.6% | 2.93 | 1.81 |
Ligue 1 | 1,678 | 55.1% | 53.5% | 2.82 | 1.81 |
La Liga | 1,900 | 51.8% | 47.4% | 2.59 | 1.93 |
Serie A | 1,900 | 51.4% | 48.9% | 2.61 | 1.95 |
Championship | 2,760 | 51.3% | 47.6% | 2.54 | 1.95 |
Primeira Liga | 1,530 | 49.3% | 51.0% | 2.65 | 2.03 |
Brasileiro Série A | 1,900 | 48.6% | 44.3% | 2.41 | 2.06 |
Seasons 2021/22 to 2025/26, or 2021 to 2025 for MLS and Brazil's Série A, which run on the calendar year. MLS and Liga MX are regular-season matches only. The break-even price is the decimal price at which taking Yes in every match would have broken even, before any margin or fee.
Goals explain most of the order. Primeira Liga produced more over 2.5 results than La Liga, Serie A or the Championship, and fewer BTTS results. A quarter of its over 2.5 results, 25.3%, were wins to nil, the highest share of the eight European leagues.
Over 21 seasons the Bundesliga also leads the European leagues in the data, at 56.9%, and Primeira Liga is lowest at 47.4%.
What changes the chance of both teams scoring?
Two things in the pre-match prices: how many goals the market expects, and how strong the favourite is.
A high over 2.5 price pushes BTTS up, but by less than the price itself rises. In the 2,660 Premier League matches from 2019/20 to 2025/26, we grouped matches by the market's over 2.5 goals price at kick-off, margin removed. BTTS rose from 47.0% where the market put over 2.5 below 45%, to 59.3% where it put it at 65% or more. The last five seasons on their own show the same climb, from 50.3% to 59.6%.
A strong favourite pulled BTTS down until recently. We split the 7,922 Premier League matches in which Bet365's Friday prices made one side favourite by that side's chance of winning, with the margin removed. From 2005/06 to 2020/21, both teams scored in 52.9% of matches with a favourite below 45%. With a favourite at 75% or above, 41.1% did, and the underdog failed to score in 56.4%.
The last five seasons look different. From 2021/22 to 2025/26, BTTS ran between 50.0% and 57.6% in every band of favourite strength. With a favourite at 75% or above it came in at 54.1%, and the underdog failed to score in 43.2% of those 148 matches.

Away sides blank more than home sides. Away teams failed to score in 32.6% of Premier League matches since 2005/06, and home teams in 23.2%.
Is BTTS the same as over 2.5 goals?
No. The two markets agree on most matches and split on two kinds of score. A 1-1 draw is BTTS Yes and under 2.5 goals. A 3-0 win is over 2.5 goals and BTTS No.
7,980 Premier League matches, 2005/06 to 2025/26 | Over 2.5 goals | Under 2.5 goals |
|---|---|---|
BTTS Yes | 40.6% (2-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-1) | 10.8% (1-1) |
BTTS No | 11.7% (3-0, 0-3, 4-0, 0-4) | 36.9% (1-0, 2-0, 0-0, 0-1) |
The two markets agreed on 77.5% of the matches. The rest split between 1-1 draws (10.8%) and wins to nil by three goals or more (11.7%).
That split explains why BTTS moved more slowly than the goals price. Where the market put over 2.5 at 65% or more, 17.0% of matches were wins to nil by three goals or more. Below 45%, 9.0% were. The share of 1-1 draws fell from 14.4% to 7.7%.
What happens to BTTS at half-time?
The half-time score moves the chance further than anything in the pre-match prices.
Both teams had scored by half-time in 19.0% of Premier League matches, and from there Yes can't lose. At 0-0, which was 29.3% of matches, both teams went on to score in 24.6%: less than half the pre-match rate of 51.3%.
With one side 1-0 up, it depends who leads. When the underdog led, the favourite went on to score in 62.4% of matches. When the favourite led, the underdog scored in 43.3%. The size of the lead mattered less than who held it. With the favourite 2-0 up, the underdog scored in 39.4% of matches, and at 3-0 or more in 41.8%. With the underdog 2-0 up, the favourite scored in 62.9%.

A BTTS price moves most when a side scores its first goal, and prices take in goals quickly. A study of high-frequency betting prices around goals scored just before half-time found that prices "update swiftly and fully" (Croxson and Reade, 2014).
How do you judge a BTTS price?
Turn it into a probability and compare it with how often both teams score in matches like this one. On Pred the price is the market's implied probability, so 55¢ means 55%. For a bookmaker's decimal price, divide 1 by it: 1.80 implies 55.6%, with the bookmaker's margin still included (how to convert a price).
Then start from the league's rate and adjust for the match. Over the last five seasons both teams scored in 55.3% of Premier League matches, so a Yes price of 55¢ is in line with the record. A match with over 2.5 priced at 62% sits in the band where BTTS landed 58.0% from 2019/20 to 2025/26. A Yes price of 55¢ there implies 3 points less than that record.
How do you trade BTTS on Pred?
- Sign up with email or Google, and Pred creates a non-custodial wallet for you. Deposit in US dollars or euros, or transfer USDC. The minimum deposit is $1.
- Pick a match. Pred lists BTTS on the Premier League, the Championship, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. It also covers Primeira Liga, the Süper Lig, MLS, Brazil's Série A, Liga MX and the Champions League.
- Buy Yes if you expect both teams to score, or No if you expect one to blank. A market order fills at once at the best available price. A limit order sets your price. If it rests on the book until another trader fills it, it pays no fee.
- Sell some or all of the position before or during the match, at the best bid minus a small fee.
- Or hold to full time. Winning contracts pay $1 each, and markets resolve within three to four minutes of the result being confirmed.
Common questions
What does BTTS mean?
BTTS stands for both teams to score. It is a football market with two outcomes: Yes wins if each team scores at least once, and No wins if at least one team fails to score. It settles on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so extra time and penalty shoot-outs don't count.
What does BTTS No mean?
BTTS No wins when at least one team fails to score, and it covers more than 0-0. Of the 3,883 Premier League matches from 2005/06 to 2025/26 that settled No, 14.8% finished 0-0. Home wins to nil made up 52.3% and away wins to nil 32.9%.
How often do both teams score in the Premier League?
Both teams scored in 51.3% of Premier League matches from 2005/06 to 2025/26, 4,097 of 7,980. The rate ranged from 44.2% in 2005/06 to 61.6% in 2023/24, and the last three seasons all came in at 56% or more. In 2026/27, both teams scored in 40 of the first 80 matches.
Which league has the most BTTS?
Of the 11 leagues on Pred we checked, the Bundesliga had the highest BTTS rate over the last five complete seasons: 60.1% of 1,530 matches. MLS followed at 59.6% and the Süper Lig at 56.3%. Brazil's Série A was lowest at 48.6%, and the Premier League sat at 55.3%.
Is BTTS the same as over 2.5 goals?
No. The two markets agreed on 77.5% of Premier League matches from 2005/06 to 2025/26. A 1-1 draw, 10.8% of matches, is BTTS Yes but under 2.5 goals. Wins to nil by three goals or more, 11.7% of matches, are over 2.5 goals but BTTS No.
What happens to BTTS at 0-0 at half-time?
In Premier League matches that were 0-0 at half-time, both teams went on to score in 24.6%, less than half the pre-match rate of 51.3%. When the underdog led 1-0 at the break, the favourite scored in the second half in 62.4% of matches, so BTTS landed.
What are good odds for BTTS?
A price is worth taking only when it implies a lower chance than the real one. Divide 1 by the decimal price to get the implied chance, then compare it with the record. Both teams scored in 55.3% of Premier League matches over the last five seasons, which breaks even at 1.81. Over 21 seasons the rate was 51.3%, which breaks even at 1.95.
Can you trade BTTS on Pred?
Yes. Pred lists BTTS as a Yes/No contract on football matches, priced in cents that read as the market's implied probability. You can sell before or during the match. Markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time and resolve within three to four minutes of the result being confirmed.
How we tested
The data is football-data.co.uk's results files: 21 Premier League seasons, 2005/06 to 2025/26, and five complete seasons for 10 more leagues Pred lists.
- BTTS. A match counts as Yes when both teams scored in the full-time score. League matches have no extra time, so that is the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
- Leagues. 2021/22 to 2025/26 for the Premier League, Championship, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Primeira Liga, Süper Lig and Liga MX. 2021 to 2025 for MLS and Brazil's Série A, which run on the calendar year. For MLS and Liga MX we kept regular-season matches only, and checked that every team played 34 each season.
- Left out. Matches the files list with no prices. That removes 29 Süper Lig results from 2022/23, all 3-0 or 0-3 and all involving Gaziantep or Hatayspor. It also removes one Primeira Liga match from 2011/12, which affects only the 21-season figures.
- Favourite. The side with the shorter Bet365 price on Friday afternoon, or Tuesday for midweek games (notes). We removed the margin by scaling the three implied probabilities to add up to 100%. 58 matches with equal home and away prices were left out, leaving 7,922: 6,046 from 2005/06 to 2020/21 and 1,876 from 2021/22 to 2025/26.
- Goals price. The market-average closing over and under 2.5 goals prices for 2019/20 to 2025/26, 2,660 matches, with the margin removed the same way.
- Half-time. Half-time and full-time scores for all 7,980 Premier League matches. Favourite and underdog leads use the Bet365 Friday prices. A lead means the trailing side had not scored, so 2-0 includes 0-2.
- Break-even price. 1 divided by the share of matches in which both teams scored.
- Limits. The files hold no BTTS prices, so the post compares BTTS results with match-result and goals prices, not with BTTS prices themselves. The half-time figures are outcome frequencies, not traded prices.
- Pred. Market types, prices, cashout, order types, fees, sign-up and deposits come from Pred's docs. The BTTS settlement rules come from the market rules in Pred's public market API. The API also showed the BTTS market open during a live Süper Lig match on 1 November 2026. Resolution timing comes from Pred's post on settlement.
